Is Google Chrome an OS ?
To install Chrome I had to reboot my home computer : it only runs on Windows right now and I was on a Linux session.
I have partially switched to Linux (Ubuntu) since I have tested Vista at work. Vista sucks so much that it really convinced me to switch to Linux (I now have a dual boot on my home PC with XP and Ubuntu).
Yes Linux is great, and yes Chrome is great. Google announced a Linux and Mac version to be available soon.
Why am I talking about Operating Systems instead of the cool new features of Chrome, the future of Firefox…? Well because it might be the real issue ! (and there are probably thousands of pages presenting Chrome features).
As noted by several people, such as Walt Mossberg, Chrome allows you to run some web pages as applications. I have just tried with my zimbra webmail and it is like having outlook or thunderbird running. The “primary” OS (Mac, Linux, Windows) might well become the first necessary layer to run applications, but the real OS may become Google Chrome…
The quote from Walt Mossberg article :
“Google sees the Web as a platform for the software programs, or applications, that currently run directly on computer operating systems, notably Microsoft’s Windows. It says current browsers lack the underlying architecture to enable future, more powerful Web applications that will rely more heavily on a common Web programming language called JavaScript. Chrome was designed to be the world’s speediest browser at handling JavaScript.
That move might one day make Chrome a sort of online operating system that competes with Windows. “Think of Chrome as more than a simple Web browser,” Google declares. “It’s a platform for running Web applications.”
