Who said upgrading wordpress was a breeze ?
Some news about this blog : I upgraded, after many hesitations, from Wordpress 2.0 to Wordpress 2.2..
I tried a so called automatic upgrade plug in , but all I got was a database connexion error. I almost panicked.
Fortunately, my host provides Fantastico which performs automatic upgrades… But not to the last version of Wordpress (2.3). Only to 2.2.
After that, all my posts were duplicated and I found out that it was a plug-in issue. Everything came back in order when I deactivated all plug ins. I haven’t restored them all so I can’t say which was the guilty one.
Then I realized some funny characters appearing in the posts, like €, where accents used to be… I spent an awful time tracking them and editing the posts… I had the same problem when I moved host. I suppose it has to do with encoding but I don’t know how to solve it.
I garantee I will now wait for wordpress 3.0 before upgrading.
On the bright side, this upgrade allows the “subscribe to comment” plug-in to work fine… Got the message ?

Manually upgrading is a breeze (except for the whole backup thing). I don’t know about any “automatic upgrade” plugin, but I wouldn’t trust it…

Is there a way to avoid the weird characters ?

I think it has something to do with localization. Try searching the Wordpress codex
