What’s wrong with Google Analytics?

At first glance i thought it was cool.

And then after a few days I started to look for the hourly breakdown of my visitors. In vain.

My sister, a new but already promising blogger, said to me :”the new analytics : but it’s crap!” I realized that my initial enthusiasm was blinded by a need to be one of the first to post screenshots of the new interface… so lame.

When Analytics were down the other day, I found this post from Jeffrey Veen, the leading developer, explaining the new interface, and - that’s the beauty of blogs - an extraordinary rich debate in the comments from pros and cons of the new interface (congrats to Jeff for letting negative feedbacks have their say) : here is a quick list of the main complaints that have been made in these comments :

1. No more hourly stats available

2. Not firefox friendly/Flash 9 compliant

3. No more direct access to important data (referring sites)

4. Texts and graphs are too big

5. Can’t select a year

6. Can only view 100 keywords at a time (at least on the first pages)

7. Difficult to find cross segments of Network Location (locations of referrers I believe : “click on network location. Find the network you want to cross-reference and click on it. There’s a nice little “segment” dropdown there”.)

8. Cannot view visits, bounce rate, page views and conversion rates on the same table.

9. Cannot see visits/pageviews by month over the year.

10. On world map, cannot see where users connect from unless you click to the country level.

11. Cannot export bulk data

12. When selecting a period to analyze, graphs still shows the same two months period with the requested days highlighted.

13. Cannot click on the Column head of the Calendar and choose all Mondays or Tuesdays for a particular Month.

Personally I like the design of the new interface and the structure is leaner (I didn’t really like the role segmentation between CEO view, Marketing manager view, webmaster view…). But I hope Google addresses missing functionalities and considers what people really need to do with this tool.

It’s still good, and it’s free.. But the hourly report missing is really annoying.
