A short History of Rock’n'Roll?
A short History of rock ‘n’ roll, powered by Youtube, or 18 cult rock performances you need to watch.
Bob Dylan, Don’t think twice it’s all right - 1965
My favorite Dylan song. Simply gorgeous.
Velvet Underground - Live in New York - 1966
A fantastic document - 8 mm footage of their first public appearance. With Andy Warhol, Nico, Lou Reed, Gerard Malanga, Eddie Sedgwick …
Simon and Garfunkel - Homeward Bound - 1967
Live in Monterey. Scarborough Fair was one of my first records.
Contrary to what follows, they wouldn’t fit in a short history of punk. Nice sweaters, though.
The MC 5 - Kick out the Jam - 1968
Mythic. I like the cars driving by in the background.
Ten Years After - I’m going home - 1969
1969 is definitely the Woodstock year. Among the many historic gigs, this one from Ten years after may not be the most famous or revolutionary, but it’s the one that struck me most when I saw it in College, 20 years after.
Iggy and the Stooges Live Cincinnatti - 1970
Amazing contrast between the TV speaker and Iggy’s post modern silhouette.
John Lennon - Imagine - 1971
Live in NYC. Just Guitars. Just great.
Lou Reed, live at “Le Bataclan”, Paris. 1972
Last gig with Nico and John Cale. Lou Reed sings Berlin. “You’re right, and I’m wrong, you know I’m gonna miss you now that you’ve gone, one sweet day”. If it doesn’t break your heart, you probably don’t have one.
Rolling Stones - Love in Vain - 1972
Singing an old blues. Mick Taylor on guitar.
Mark Bolan and the T-Rex - Get it On - 1973
Pope of glam rock, guitar hero. Live and kicking. Check out the guitar solo. It turns rather funky toward the end. A must see.
David Bowie (and Cher) - Young Americans + medley - 1975
Who can contest to Bowie the title of most elegant artist of the XXth century ? His grace is simply fascinating. Or is it the side effects of the cocaine ?
Sexpistols - Anarchy in the UK - 1976
Probably the biggest fraud in Rock history, but they made it into history.
The Cure - Boys don’t cry - 1979
The Clash - London calling - 1980
Bauhaus - In the Flatfield - 1984
“I get bored, I do get bored !” I loved it.
The Smiths - The Queen is dead - 1986
Sonic Youth - 1990
Nirvana - Territorial Pissings - Sometime in the Nineties
This was not exactly the song they were supposed to play that day.
With this ends this short history of Rock’n'Roll.

I forgot that Morrissey was once that….energetic. Now he’s so much more like David Bowie.
And I’d add that you’re missing:

Yeah I forgot Joy Division.
Though I never much listened to them, they definitely belong here.
I didn’t expect them to look so clean…
Thanks for this.
